Maguire, Wan-Bissaka debut for United, Lampard selects Mount and Abraham

Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both make their Manchester United debuts against Chelsea at Old Trafford, while Frank Lampard has selected Tammy Abraham to lead the line with Mason Mount also starting.

Centre-back Maguire joined United on Monday, costing £80million from Leicester City a fee that makes him the most expensive defender of all time.

And unsurprisingly he instantly slots into United s defence alongside Victor Lindelof, while Wan-Bissaka – a £50m acquisition from Crystal Palace – starts at right-back having impressed during pre-season.

With club captain Ashley Young on the bench, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has chosen David de Gea to wear the armband ahead of Paul Pogba, who starts in midfield alongside Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira.

Tottenham 3-0 Pacos de Ferreira (3-1 agg): Brace from re-focused Kane seals Europa Conference League

Harry Kane marked his first start of the season with a decisive brace as Tottenham overturned a 1-0 first-leg defeat with a 3-0 win over Pacos de Ferreira to secure a place in the inaugural Europa Conference League.

Kane has played only 18 minutes domestically in 2021-22 following a heavily interrupted pre-season that was dominated by uncertainty surrounding his future, but after seemingly accepting Spurs refusal to sell him, he was back in the starting XI and off the mark for the campaign.

The visitors aggregate lead stood for just nine minutes as the lively Bryan Gil capped his home debut with a fine assist to tee up Kane and the England striker doubled his tally just after the half-hour mark.

Nuno Espirito Santo s side subsequently produced a controlled and pr…

Neuer: Bayern ´lucky´ Lewandowski did not score on Champions League return

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer believes his side were lucky not to concede to Robert Lewandowski on his return to Bavaria.

The Poland international has been in sensational form since joining Barcelona, scoring a hat-trick on his Champions League debut for the Blaugrana against Viktoria Plzen last week, but he was unable to add to his tally at the Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski was thwarted by former team-mate Neuer from a close-range header after he had squandered an opportunity on the volley, blazing his attempt over the crossbar.

Both chances could have easily been taken by Lewandowski, and Neuer admitted that Bayern had benefitted from good fortune in their 2-0 victory.

I think it was an emotional game for Lewy because he was very successful here …

Mackay delighted to quiet ´background noise´

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay was pleased to have silenced some of the background noise at the club with a 1-0 win over Swansea City.

Steven Caulker s second-half header lifted the gloom at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday against a backdrop of uncertainty over Mackay s future following owner Vincent Tan s decision to replace head of recruitment Ian Moody with 23-year-old Kazakh Alisher Apsalyamov.

Apsalyamov has since been forced to step aside over issues with a visa as the club s fans continue to voice their disapproval of Tan s ownership.

However, victory in the first top-flight Wales derby moved Cardiff above their fierce rivals, who finished with 10 men after goalkeeper Michel Vorm was sent off for a foul on Fraizer Campbell late on.

And Mackay was qui…

Qatar 1-3 Portugal: Otavio scores debut goal in much-changed Selecao´s friendly win

Otavio marked his senior international debut with a goal as Portugal beat nine-man Qatar 3-1 in Saturday s international friendly at the Nagyerdei Stadium in Hungary.

Portugal made 11 changes on the back of their dramatic 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland on Wednesday and initially looked disjointed in the opening quarter of the contest.

But quickfire headers from Andre Silva and Otavio put Portugal in control before half-time, at which point Qatar were a player light following Meshaal Barsham s dismissal.

Without talismanic skipper Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Santos side were given a scare when Abdelkarim Hassan pulled one back, though Boualem Khoukhi was next to be sent off and Bruno Fernandes made certain of the win with a late penalty.

Maradona banned from football for two months – FIFA

Diego Maradona was banned from all football for two months by FIFA on Sunday over his sexually-explicit rant last month.

The Argentina coach, who was also fined 25,000 Swiss francs (24,691 dollars, 16,565 euros), fell foul of world football s governing body after losing his cool with journalists following Argentina s qualification for the World Cup

Maradona s outburst came after Argentina s 1-0 win over Uruguay in October, which allowed the two-time world champions to squeeze narrowly into next year s finals after a low-key and tense qualifying round.

The 48-year-old sporting icon, a hero in Argentina after skippering the 1986 World Cup winning team, told journalists to suck it and keep sucking it .

A FIFA statement said: The sanction applies from 15 Nov…

City confirm Jovetic deal

Manchester City have completed the signing of Stevan Jovetic from Serie A side Fiorentina.

The Montenegro international moves to the Etihad Stadium following a hugely successful 2012-13 season with the Florence outfit.

The 23-year-old was an integral part of Vincenzo Montella s side last term, but could not inspire them to UEFA Champions League football as they narrowly missed out to Milan on the final day of the campaign.

However, Jovetic will now compete in Europe s premier club competition for new City manager Manuel Pellegrini after becoming the Chilean s fourth signing of the transfer window.

Jovetic s spell at the Stadio Artemio Franchi was blighted by a cruciate ligament injury that forced him to miss the entirety of the 2010-11 campaign.

However, th…

Bayern reject Barcelona offer for rising star Tillman

Bayern Munich have rejected an offer from Barcelona for teenager Timothy Tillman.

The Spanish champions made an approach to sign the 18-year-old for next season with a view to integrating him into the first team within the next three years, according to his agent.

Tillman, who signed for a €500,000 fee from Greuther Furth in 2015, has reportedly attracted the attention of Real Madrid in the past year following a string of impressive displays in the UEFA Youth League and with the Germany Under-18 side.

Agent Christian Rossner has confirmed that Barca made an offer but that Bayern president Uli Hoeness personally intervened in order to keep the highly rated forward at the Allianz Arena.

There was a tangible offer from Barcelona, Rossner told Sport Bild.…

Simeone: More to come from Griezmann, Lemar

Diego Simeone knows Atletico Madrid suffered in the absence of Antoine Greizmann late in their 1-0 LaLiga win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, as the coach waits for the team to gel with star signing Thomas Lemar.

Griezmann scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and was substituted with 14 minutes to go, triggering a period of pressure from the visitors that Atleti were perhaps fortunate to survive.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder is still seeking full match fitness after his World Cup-winning exertions with France in June and July, but Simeone is well aware of his importance to the team.

Griezmann is [improving] his level, he told a news conference.

It s clear we re looking [on the field] for a g…
