For all the things that there are to love about the NFL—idiotic and wholly unaccountable leadership, a profoundly malfunctioning moral compass, the new rules that no one even knows how to enforce, the whole Nathan Peterman Thing—the purest pleasure it offers is the chance to be wrong as hell about it. There are some things about the NFL that everyone knows are good and fun and worth all the bluster and grossness, but honestly a decent percentage of those wind up busting and being replaced with good things no one expected. The fun stuff is always what we don’t know, and being wrong is what this whole thing is about and mostly where the fun is. And with the 2018 NFL season now just about here, What We Don’t Know covers just about everything. We know that at some point this season…
Thanks to FIFA’s newly passed financial transparency rules, we have for the first time confirmation of exactly how much Sepp Blatter and at least one other top official earned in their roles at FIFA. According to these numbers, the former president made about $3.6 million in 2015. Here’s a breakdown of Blatter’s salary along with his chief lieutenant, former secretary general Jérôme Valcke. The only other insight we’ve gotten into the salaries of FIFA’s top officials came in 2011, when Blatter claimed (without providing any evidence) that he made about $1 million. There has been somewhat informed speculation as to how much Blatter made over the years, and most of that figured that FIFA’s president had a higher salary than what we’ve found out today. Comparing Blatter…
Tom Brady is old. But Matt Stover is the oldest player to ever play in a Super Bowl … for now. Like, today. And tomorrow and Saturday. But that will all change on Sunday when Brady, at 43 years old, takes his first snap for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Halfway through the 2009 season, Stover signed with the Indianapolis Colts to fill in for an injured Adam Vinatieri. The 42-year-old veteran kicker became the oldest player to ever play in the big game when he laced up his boots in Super Bowl XLIV. In the game, he kicked a field goal in the first quarter and tacked on two extra points. But Stover’s leg wasn’t enough for the Colts, who lost to the New Orleans Saints 31-17. Brady is currently the oldest non-kicker to play in a Super Bowl. And after he breaks this SB record on Sunday, wh…

data-mm-id=”_gfa8ccr8b”>Eli Manning went out a winner. In what was likely his final start at home (the Giants have another home game, but Daniel Jones should be back under center by then), Manning helped navigate the Giants to a 36-20 win over the Dolphins to up his career record as a starting quarterback to 117-117. He jogged off the field to a standing ovation from Giants fans. A good day for Manning, a disastrous day for the Giants. The Giants came into this NFL-Draft-positioning showdown against the Dolphins as the lone team in the league with only two wins. They were set to pick second in the NFL Draft (behind the one-win Bengals), with the possibility of landing transcendent pass rusher Chase Young. Now, after this win, the Giants are one of four teams (Giants, Dolphins, Lions, R…
data-mm-id=”_0f0wuipsq”>With Alabama's loss to Auburn on Saturday, its College Football Playoff hopes are officially over, marking the first year the Tide won't appear in the CFP. The loss of a talent like Tua Tagovailoa will always hurt, but they also gave up 48 points in the loss, the most ever under Nick Saban. As is often the case when a dynastic powerhouse collapses like Alabama did, the "sky is falling" takes come hot and heavy. Paul Finebaum brought his on Sunday morning's edition of SportsCenter, where he said that Saban's window at Alabama is closing: "Nick Saban. He's the head coach. He promised after the 28-point loss to Clemson that the Alabama factor would be reestablished. Has anyone seen it? I haven’t," Finebaum said. "…
data-mm-id=”_kdx4ijqfo”>LeBron James dominated the Lakers' Sunday night matchup against rising star Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis was ruled out with a sore right knee prior to the game, so the onus was on LeBron to power the Lakers to a win on the road. He answered the call and more, putting up 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists while leading his teammates to a 122-114 victory. Skip Bayless believes this performance clinched the MVP award over Giannis Antetokounmpo: “LeBron clinched the MVP last night. National TV, no AD – it’s all about the narrative. He is doing it in Year 17 at an astounding level.”@RealSkipBayless on LeBron's 30-point triple-double — 34 pts, 12 rebs, 13 asts pic.twitter.com/4k3tHsF6GE— UNDISPUTED (@undisputed)…
data-mm-id=”_0p8o5imjw”>There wasn't much to criticize Joe Burrow for last year as he posted one of the great quarterback performances in college football history. The results speak for themselves and paved the way for him to be selected first overall. Because things need to be analyzed, poked, and prodded for weaknesses, a fair-minded individual could assess the relative lack of zip on his ball. The supposed lack of arm strength could give the Bengals some pause for concern — though not a measurable amount.CBS Sports' Danny Kanell made a point that is probably obvious to a lot of smart people but hit my ears in a new way yesterday when he pointed out that it's far preferable to have a quarterback who gets results and checks a lot of boxes to one that can only shock and…
data-mm-id=”_gsdo017aj”>The saga of Colin Cowherd vs. Baker Mayfield continued on Thursday as the Fox Sports host discussed how the Browns have a fairly low over/under despite the immense talent on their roster. Cowherd pointed to how the ancient pair of Tom Brady and Drew Brees both have higher expectations based on their over/under totals and that it must be "maturity" that makes that so. He then went on to say that if the Browns don't make the playoffs, Mayfield would be fired. "If Sam Darnold struggles, Adam Gase will be fired. If Cleveland doesn't make the playoffs, Baker Mayfield is getting fired." — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/89kiiL0UHe— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) June 11, 2020Cowherd is simply baffled that oddsmakers believe Cleveland i…
